Location
Four Seasons brings its signature anticipatory service to one of the world's most remote atolls, where the rhythm of island life unfolds at the pace of tide and trade wind. Desroches Island rises from the Indian Ocean 227 kilometres southwest of Mahé, a 5.5-kilometre ribbon of coral sand and coconut palms that forms the centrepiece of the Amirante Islands. Nineteen permanent residents share this sliver of land with conservation teams who monitor nesting sea turtles and the endemic species under Island Conservation Society protection.
Thirteen kilometres of unbroken powder beach encircle the island, backed by casuarina groves and the turquoise gradients of a shallow reef shelf. This is the Outer Islands, far removed from the granite peaks of inner Seychelles. The lagoon runs through every shade of blue, from jade shallows to sapphire channels where game fish patrol the drop-offs.
Seychelles International Airport on Mahé sits 237 kilometres to the northeast, followed by a charter flight that carries you over open ocean to a coral airstrip edged by palms. The island operates on Seychellois rupee, though its real currency is solitude measured in empty shoreline and the rare privilege of near-complete seclusion.
The property anchors a coral atoll ringed by some of the Indian Ocean's most pristine reefs, offering direct access to world-class diving and fly-fishing. Walk two and a half kilometres inland to the Tortoise Sanctuary, where Aldabra giants lumber through shaded pens under conservation protocols. The surrounding waters teem with bonefish on the flats and wahoo beyond the reef; guided excursions depart at dawn when the light slants low across the lagoon. Snorkelling the house reef requires only fins and a few steps from shore.
Island Conservation Society staff lead turtle monitoring walks during nesting season, tracking hawksbill and green turtles that return to these beaches under cover of darkness. Kayak the lagoon's western shallows at high tide, or simply claim a stretch of the thirteen-kilometre beach and surrender to the particular silence that comes with being this far from anywhere. Book a sunset catamaran cruise to watch frigate birds wheel overhead as the light bleeds crimson across uninterrupted horizon.
The northwest monsoon brings warmth and afternoon showers from November through March, with temperatures hovering around 27°C and sudden downpours that clear as quickly as they arrive. The island steams gently in this season, humidity clinging to skin, vegetation at its most lush.
April and May transition into the southeast trades, when skies clear and the wind picks up across the flats. June through September delivers the driest, coolest months, temperatures dipping to the mid-twenties with steady breezes that keep the air crystalline and the reef visibility exceptional.
October marks the shift back toward the wet season, though rainfall remains moderate. The best diving and fishing align with the drier southeast trades, while turtle nesting peaks during the northwest monsoon's warmer months.
