Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat occupies a slender peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean between Nice and Monaco, a 47-metre elevation of pines and palms that has drawn European aristocracy and the international set since the Belle Époque. The air here carries salt and the scent of umbrella pines. The peninsula's two-kilometre perimeter is walkable, though most visitors content themselves with the immediate neighbourhood: Plage des Fourmis lies two hundred metres away, a crescent of sand facing the Baie des Fourmis, while the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild (1912) commands the peninsula's spine with its nine themed gardens and pink confection facade overlooking both coasts. The rhythm is slow, deliberate, insulated from the coastal traffic that hums through Villefranche-sur-Mer and Beaulieu-sur-Mer just across the water.

This is the second most expensive residential location in the world after Monaco, and it shows in the quiet: no through traffic, few commercial interruptions, just the curve of iron balconies and wisteria climbing villa walls. The commune holds barely 1,500 residents. Beaulieu-sur-Mer borders immediately to the west, its name translating to "beautiful place on sea", a descriptor that applies equally here.

Nice-Côte d'Azur Airport sits ten kilometres west, reachable via the coastal road that threads through Villefranche-sur-Mer, or the quicker autoroute inland. From Nice proper, five kilometres northwest, it's a short drive or a scenic bus ride along the Basse Corniche.

La Table du Royal occupies a terrace fringed by greenery overlooking the Baie des Fourmis, serving Mediterranean cuisine in a setting the Michelin guide describes as conducive to peaceful, intimate dinners. The menu leans into the Riviera's coastal larder: local fish, Provençal vegetables, olive oil from nearby groves. For Michelin-starred dining within striking distance, Le Louis XV – Alain Ducasse à l'Hôtel de Paris holds three stars in Monaco, nine kilometres east, a study in Mediterranean opulence where Ducasse has refined his vision since the 1990s. Mirazur, also three-starred, sits 18 kilometres along the coast in Menton, where Mauro Colagreco works between the mountains and sea, his creative menu shaped by the Italian border and mesmerizing Mediterranean views.

Beyond the table, the peninsula's beaches vary in character: Plage des Jeunes and Plage des Marinières offer sand within a kilometre, while Plage de la Réserve (700 metres) spreads pebblestones along a quieter cove. Book a table at one of the Cours Saleya market stalls in Nice, four kilometres northwest, where vendors have sold flowers, produce, and socca since the 1800s. The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild anchors the peninsula's cultural offerings, its collection of Sèvres porcelain and Fragonard panels worth an afternoon's study.

July and August deliver the Riviera's signature heat, temperatures climbing to the high twenties, the light sharp and white off the water, the peninsula's pines casting short shadows at midday. Rain is rare, humidity tempered by sea breezes. The beaches fill, but the peninsula's residential character keeps crowds thinner than Nice or Cannes.

Spring and autumn soften the light and thin the visitor numbers. May and September hover around twenty degrees, warm enough for terrace dinners and morning swims, cool enough for walks to the Villa Ephrussi without the July glare. October and November bring more frequent rain, the Mediterranean turning steely grey between storms.

Winter remains mild by northern standards, daytime temperatures in the low teens, but the Riviera loses its lustre when the sun disappears. February is the wettest month. Still, this is the season that built Nice's reputation as a winter resort town, and the tranquility that drew the Belle Époque set still holds when the peninsula empties of summer visitors.
