For wine beyond the glass, Nectar Wine Lounge in Hayes Valley pours small-production California bottles in a neighbourhood setting. Huntington Falls, a thirty-three-metre cascade in the Presidio's forested ravines, offers a surprising retreat six kilometres from the urban grid. Start with a walk through Golden Gate Park's western reaches, where the Pacific wind shapes the cypress groves.

San Francisco's microclimate makes a mockery of California's sunshine reputation. Summer, from June through September, brings the famous fog: it rolls through the Golden Gate each afternoon, cooling the air to the low twenties and rendering August the greyest month. Mornings start clear, the light sharp and white.

Autumn offers the warmest, clearest weather. September and October temperatures climb into the mid-twenties, the fog retreats, and the city takes on a bronze glow. Indian summer, they call it here, and it's the best season to visit.

Winter means rain, heaviest in December and January, though never the relentless downpours of northern Europe. The city gleens between showers, temperatures hovering in the mid-teens. Spring arrives wet in March, then dries and warms through May, wildflowers carpeting the coastal headlands.
