Winter arrives hard and lingers. January and February bring temperatures below freezing, snowfall that transforms the Common into cross-country ski terrain, and a particular blue light that makes the harbour ice glitter. Spring is brief and glorious: by May, magnolias bloom along Commonwealth Avenue, and the Charles River fills with rowing crews.

Summer softens the city. July and August hover near 28°C, humid enough that locals flee to Cape Cod, leaving the waterfront restaurants and harbour cruises pleasantly uncrowded. September is the sweet spot: warm afternoons, cool evenings, the trees along the Esplanade just beginning to turn.
