Location
The Pavillon de la Reine takes its name from Anne of Austria, Queen of France and wife of Louis XIII, who once resided in this magnificent residence on Place des Vosges. The square itself, completed in 1612, is the oldest plAnned square in Paris, a perfect symmetry of red brick and limestone arcades enclosing a central garden of clipped lime trees and gravel paths. The 4th arrondissement pulses with the rhythm of the Marais: cobblestone lanes threading past 17th-century hôtels particuliers, the hum of conversation spilling from corner bistros, the scent of fresh bread from boulangeries tucked under vaulted passageways.
Step outside and you are in the heart of historic Paris. The Seine flows three kilometres west, its banks lined with booksellers and bridges that have framed the city's evolution since medieval times. To the east, Marché Bastille sets up its stalls three hundred metres away on Thursdays and Sundays, a riot of seasonal produce, flowers, and sharp-voiced vendors.
Charles de Gaulle Airport lies twenty-two kilometres northeast, Orly fourteen kilometres south. The Métro's Art Nouveau-decorated stations bring the city's arrondissements within easy reach, while the Right Bank unfolds on foot from the hotel's doorstep.
On-site dining centres on Anne, a one-Michelin-starred restaurant serving modern cuisine within the property's walls. For culinary ambition beyond the hotel, Plénitude at Cheval Blanc Paris holds three Michelin stars, just under two kilometres away inside the revamped Samaritaine department store, where Arnaud Donckele applies the same exacting hand that earned him three stars at La Vague d'Or. Kei, helmed by Nagano-born Kei Kobayashi and trained under Gilles Goujon and Alain Ducasse, offers creative modern cuisine two kilometres distant. Book a table at either for a masterclass in contemporary French gastronomy.
The Banks of the Seine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site three kilometres west, trace the city's history from the Louvre to Notre-Dame, while Marché Baudoyer, eight hundred metres away, pulses with neighbourhood energy and seasonal market stalls. Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France thread through the arrondissement one kilometre from the hotel, a reminder of the medieval pilgrims who once passed through Paris en route to Spain. The Marais unfolds in all directions: galleries in former workshops, falafel stands on Rue des Rosiers, quiet courtyards behind heavy wooden doors.
Summer, from June through August, brings the city's warmest days, temperatures climbing into the low twenties, the light turning golden over the Seine as tables spill onto pavements and the rhythm of the city shifts outdoors. July and August see the least rain, though occasional thunderstorms arrive without warning, dramatic and brief.
Spring and autumn frame the ideal visiting windows. April through June and September offer mild temperatures, the chestnut trees along the boulevards in bloom or turning bronze, the air crisp enough for long walks through the Marais without the press of high-season crowds. Expect occasional showers, but nothing that dampens the city's appeal.
Winter, from December through February, brings short days and temperatures dipping just above freezing, the streets quieter, café windows fogged with warmth. Rain replaces snow most years, but the city takes on an intimate quality, the crowds thinned, the light soft and grey over the rooftops.
