The Statue of Liberty rises from the harbour five kilometres south, Bartholdi's copper figure visible from the waterfront promenade, though the monument itself requires a ferry departure from Battery Park.

Winter settles over Manhattan with sharp clarity. January temperatures hover near freezing, the air dry and bright, and the city's pace quickens against the cold. Temperatures climb into the high teens, the city shaking off its winter contraction. This is the best time to walk Manhattan's neighbourhoods, before summer's humidity sets in.

July and August bring heat that radiates from the pavement and humidity that thickens the air. The city empties slightly as residents flee to the coast, but cultural programming continues. September offers the ideal blend: warm days, cooler evenings, and the return of the city's full energy after the summer lull. October extends this golden period, the light turning slanted and amber before November ushers in the swift descent toward winter.
