For day trips beyond the city, Olympic National Park (83 kilometres northwest) protects glacier-clad peaks, alpine meadows, and temperate rainforests within one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the United States. Start with the Hoh Rain Forest, where Sitka spruce grow draped in moss, or hike Hurricane Ridge for views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Book a morning departure to maximize daylight during winter months.

Winter transforms Seattle into a study in grey light, the sky pressing low over the sound from November through March. Temperatures hover between 6 and 9 degrees, and rain falls steadily. The city slows, coffee shops fill, and the mountains across the water disappear for days behind cloud banks. This is the season that defines the local character.

Spring arrives tentatively in April, cherry blossoms opening along the waterfront as temperatures climb toward 15 degrees. By May, rainfall eases and the city shakes off its winter introspection. Summer brings the reward: July and August offer crystalline light, temperatures in the mid-twenties, and almost no rain.

Autumn holds the best balance. September and early October deliver warm days, cooler evenings, and the first serious rain doesn't arrive until November. The summer crowds thin, and the city returns to its residents.
