Location
Carlisle Bay sits on Antigua's southwestern coast, where the island curves into a deep, protected bay sheltered by headlands and fringed with white sand. The beach here stretches in a gentle arc, backed by a grove of palms that sways in the trade winds. The water shifts from pale turquoise in the shallows to darker sapphire farther out, calm enough for swimming year-round.
Old Road, the surrounding neighbourhood, takes its name from the original colonial route that once connected plantation estates across the island. The area retains a quiet, unhurried character, removed from the busier tourist corridors. A short drive northeast brings you to English Harbour and the Antigua Naval Dockyard, a Georgian-era complex of stone warehouses, officers' quarters, and naval buildings set within walled enclosures, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dockyard's deep, narrow bays once sheltered British warships during the age of sail, and the restored structures offer a tangible record of 18th-century naval power in the Caribbean.
V. C. Bird International Airport lies 14 kilometres northeast, a straightforward 20-minute drive along coastal roads lined with sea grape and casuarina trees.
The property sits directly on Carlisle Bay Beach, a crescent of soft sand just steps from guest rooms. Motorised watersports launch from the shore: waterskiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking in water that remains glassy calm most mornings. Grace Bay Beach and Morris Bay Beach are short walks along the coast, both quieter and less developed. For golf, Jolly Harbour Golf Club lies eight kilometres north, an 18-hole course that winds between lagoons and fairways edged with bougainvillea.
Eight kilometres east, the Antigua Naval Dockyard anchors a full day of exploration. Walk the stone quays where Nelson's ships once docked, climb the heights of Shirley Lookout for views over the harbour, and visit the Dockyard Museum's collection of naval artefacts. Book a table at one of the waterfront restaurants in English Harbour for grilled mahi-mahi and rum punch served dockside. Heritage Market, 11 kilometres north near St. John's, gathers local vendors selling fresh soursop, sugar apples, and handmade pepper sauce on Saturday mornings.
January through April delivers the driest, most temperate stretch, with highs in the mid to upper 20s and light breezes that keep the air crisp. The trade winds pick up in February and March, filling the harbour with racing yachts and making beach days particularly pleasant.
May through August brings warmer, more humid conditions, with temperatures climbing into the high 20s. Mornings are still clear, but afternoon showers arrive more frequently, brief and tropical, leaving the air thick with salt and frangipani.
September and October mark the wettest months, with heavier rainfall and the occasional tropical disturbance. November through December transitions back to drier weather, though humidity lingers until late in the year. The best window for travel runs December through May, when sunshine is most reliable and the water stays calm.
