Location
The northwest coast of Antigua unfolds in a string of crescent bays, where the Caribbean turns a shade of turquoise that shifts from jade to sapphire depending on the depth and the hour. Five Islands village sits on this luminous stretch, a settlement named for the cluster of small islands visible offshore. The atmosphere here is residential Antigua: quiet coastal roads lined with sea grape and frangipani, the occasional rum shop, the sound of waves on multiple beaches within easy reach.
Galley Bay Beach lies just 200 metres from the property, a three-quarter-mile sweep of white sand backed by dunes and coconut palms. Hawsbill Beach, less than a kilometre west, occupies a protected cove where four separate beaches meet at rocky headlands. The Atlantic side of the island feels wilder, but here on the leeward coast the water stays calm enough for swimming most of the year. Deep Bay, just over a kilometre north, holds the rusted skeleton of a sunken freighter visible in the shallows.
V.C. Bird International Airport sits eleven kilometres southeast, a fifteen-minute transfer along the Sir Sydney Walling Highway. The Georgian naval architecture of English Harbour, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2016, lies nineteen kilometres south, where Admiral Nelson once commanded Britain's Caribbean fleet from a deep natural harbour ringed by fortifications and stone warehouses.
The beaches define the rhythm here. Galley Bay Beach offers the longest uninterrupted stretch of sand, while Landing Bay Beach and Eden Beach provide quieter alternatives within walking distance along the coast. Snorkelling gear will serve you well at Hawsbill, where the rocky points shelter schools of sergeant majors and parrotfish. The wreck at Deep Bay sits in shallow enough water to swim out and explore without a guide.
Heritage Market and Vendor's Square, both around five kilometres south in the direction of St. John's, sell local produce, spices, and handmade crafts on Saturday mornings when the vendors set up under awnings and the air smells of nutmeg and fresh coconut bread. For a round of golf, Jolly Harbour Golf Club lies six kilometres southeast, an 18-hole course that runs along the coastline with prevailing trade winds affecting every approach shot. The Antigua Naval Dockyard at English Harbour, nineteen kilometres south, preserves the stone officers' quarters, sail lofts, and capstan houses from the 18th century, when this harbour served as the Caribbean headquarters for the Royal Navy.
December through April brings the driest, most temperate weather, with daytime highs in the mid-to-upper twenties and steady trade winds that keep the air comfortable. The light has a particular clarity in these months, the sky a hard blue above calm seas. This is peak season for a reason.
May marks the transition, with occasional heavier showers but still plenty of sunshine. June through November constitutes the wetter season, though even August and September see generous stretches of clear weather between rain systems. The temperature climbs into the upper twenties, humidity rises, and the landscape turns a deeper green.
October brings the most rain, but showers typically pass quickly, leaving fresh-washed air and dramatic cloud formations over the offshore islands. The island never feels crowded, even in high season, but spring and early summer offer the most solitude on the beaches.
