The town's old quarter feels lived-in rather than preserved, its markets and squares untroubled by the coastal crowds below.

From this hillside perch, the Mediterranean glimmers fourteen kilometres south, while the French Alps rise behind. Terra Amata, Nice's ancient archaeological site, offers a reminder of how long humans have been drawn to this coast. The proximity to Monaco (thirteen kilometres from Nice) and the Italian border (thirty kilometres) adds a sense of geographic promise, but the appeal here is the elevation, the stillness, and the distance from the waterfront bustle.

On-site dining arrives in the form of Le Saint-Martin, a Michelin-selected modern kitchen where the views over Vence and the sea provide a compelling backdrop to each course. The cooking is stylish and restrained, the kind of meal that feels considered without being fussy. Within half an hour's drive, two three-Michelin-starred restaurants anchor the region's culinary pull: Le Louis XV at Hôtel de Paris in Monaco (twenty-six kilometres), where Alain Ducasse's Mediterranean vision has defined luxury dining for decades, and Mirazur in Menton (thirty-four kilometres), Mauro Colagreco's creative masterwork perched between mountain and sea. Vence's Halles Municipales market sits just over a kilometre away, a morning ritual of local cheese, olives, and produce that tastes of the surrounding terroir. The Cascade de Vescagne (six kilometres) offers a short walk through shaded forest to cascading water, while the Saut du Loup (nine kilometres) is a more dramatic waterfall worth the winding drive. For wine, Château de Crémat and Château de Bellet (both around eight kilometres) specialize in Bellet, the small appellation native to these hills. Start with a tasting of the rare white Rolle, the grape that thrives in this limestone.

Summer here means long, dry days with temperatures rising into the upper twenties, the kind of heat that settles into stone and releases slowly after dark. July and August see almost no rain, and the cicadas hum through the afternoons. The light is famously clear, a quality that drew Matisse and Chagall to work in Vence.

Spring and autumn bring gentler warmth, the hills turning green after winter rains, wildflowers scattered through the countryside. May and October hover around twenty degrees, ideal for walking the markets or driving the winding roads to nearby villages. These shoulder months feel less polished than summer, more attuned to local life.

Winter is mild by alpine standards, temperatures rarely dipping below five degrees, though rain arrives with some frequency. The coast below remains visible through the bare branches, and the pace of Vence slows to something almost contemplative.
