Location
COMO Hotels and Resorts brings its signature wellness-first philosophy to this private island resort, where clean cuisine, holistic therapies, and considered design meet the elemental beauty of the Maldives. The approach is intimate and restrained, favouring natural materials and a low-profile aesthetic over maximalist opulence. Maalifushi itself sits within Thaa Atoll, a scattered constellation of coral islands in the Laccadive Sea, roughly 250 kilometres south of Malé.
This is the southern Maldives, where the crowds thin and the reef systems remain largely untouched. The island measures just 800 metres in length, encircled by white sand and a house reef that drops away into deep blue channels. Kadhdhoo Airport, 56 kilometres to the northwest, serves as the gateway via seaplane or domestic flight followed by speedboat, a journey that underscores the remoteness.
The atoll itself is sparsely inhabited, with only a handful of villages scattered across neighbouring islands. Here, the rhythm is dictated by tides, the angle of light on water, and the arrival of manta rays in season. There are no street names, no markets within walking distance, no cultural landmarks beyond the island's edge. The experience is one of deliberate seclusion, where the property and the surrounding marine environment become the entire focus.
The house reef is the main event, accessible directly from the beach. Manta rays glide through cleaning stations between May and November, while whale sharks pass through the deeper channels. Snorkelling and diving excursions head to nearby sites where currents sweep plankton through submerged pinnacles, drawing schools of fusiliers and the occasional eagle ray. The COMO Shambhala Retreat offers yoga pavilions over the lagoon and a menu of Ayurvedic treatments and massage therapies that align with the brand's wellness focus. Book a private session at sunrise, when the water is glassy and the heat has yet to build.
Dining centres on Madi, the overwater restaurant serving Asian and Mediterranean dishes prepared with organic produce and line-caught fish. Tai, the property's Japanese restaurant, focuses on sashimi and tempura. For a more intimate setting, private beach dinners can be arranged on request. Beyond the property, excursions to uninhabited islands and sandbank picnics are the only outings; this is not a destination for cultural immersion or Michelin-starred forays, but rather for turning inward and offshore.
The dry season runs from January through April, when skies clear and the Laccadive Sea flattens to a mirror. Temperatures hold steady in the high twenties, the light sharp and white at midday, softening to gold by late afternoon. March is the driest month, ideal for long days on the reef.
The southwest monsoon arrives in May and lingers through October, bringing afternoon squalls and heavier cloud cover. The rain is warm and brief, often clearing by evening. Visibility underwater remains good, and this is prime time for manta ray sightings.
November and December mark the transition, with variable conditions and the heaviest rainfall of the year. The island quietens, the water takes on a darker hue, and the air feels thicker. Most visitors favour the clear-sky months, but the off-season has its own moody appeal for those who prefer fewer guests and discounted rates.
