Location
The Luxury Collection brings together independent properties chosen for their sense of place, and this resort on Corfu's southeast coast carries the island's layered history in its bones. The property looks out over the Ionian Sea from Moraitika, a quieter stretch away from the capital's crowds, where olive groves meet pebbled shorelines and the water shifts from turquoise to deep sapphire depending on the hour. Moraitika Beach lies just beyond the grounds, a gentle curve of sand and stone where fishing boats still pull in each morning.
Corfu itself has been fought over for millennia. Ancient Korkyra was a naval power that rivalled Athens and Corinth, and the island's strategic position at the mouth of the Adriatic made it a prize for Venetians, French, and British in turn. The Old Town, sixteen kilometres north and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserves centuries of Venetian fortifications and arcaded streets that feel more Italian than Greek. Two medieval castles still bracket the capital, the only Greek city enclosed in such a way.
Corfu Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport lies fourteen kilometres northeast, a short drive through citrus orchards and villages where goats graze on hillsides dotted with cypresses.
The southeast coast rewards slow exploration. Moraitika Beach is steps away for morning swims, while Boukari, a fishing hamlet five kilometres south, serves grilled octopus and sardines at waterfront tavernas where locals still moor their caïques. Chalikounas Beach and Issos Beach, both roughly five kilometres southwest, stretch along Lake Korission's barrier lagoon, a protected landscape where migratory birds gather in spring and autumn. The sand here is finer, the dunes wild with juniper and sea daffodils. Book a table at one of the beach tavernas on Issos for saganaki fried tableside and chilled retsina.
Sixteen kilometres north, the Old Town of Corfu unfolds in honey-coloured Venetian arcades and narrow kantounia alleys that climb toward the Palaio Frourio, the Old Fortress. The Liston, a grand colonnade built during French rule, faces the cricket pitch on the Spianada, a legacy of British occupation. For wine enthusiasts, Pontiglio Winery lies fifteen kilometres inland, producing whites from native Kakotrygis grapes on terraced slopes.
July and August bring heat that settles over the island, temperatures pushing past twenty-eight degrees, the sea glassy and calm. Mornings start early to catch the cooler hours before the sun climbs high and the cicadas begin their relentless chorus. The light is white and unforgiving by midday.
Spring and early autumn offer the island at its most generous. May and June see wildflowers spilling across hillsides, temperatures hovering near twenty degrees, the water warming but still bracing. September cools just enough to make long lunches and afternoon walks pleasant again, the summer crowds thinning as schools resume across Europe.
Winter and early spring bring rain, sometimes heavy, turning the island lush and green. November through February can feel subdued, restaurants closed for the season, but temperatures remain mild, rarely dipping below eight degrees. The olive harvest begins in November, pressing rooms fragrant with fresh oil.
