Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly over the peaks but dissipate by sunset, leaving the scent of wet pine in the air.

Winter settles deep and reliable from December through March, with consistent snowfall blanketing the basin and temperatures hovering just below freezing. January mornings often break clear and still, the lake steaming faintly against sub-zero air, the ski resorts grooming under cloudless cobalt skies.

Spring arrives late, with snow lingering on trails into May even as wildflowers begin pushing through meadow grasses. Autumn, particularly September and October, offers the region's finest hiking weather: warm days, cool nights, and the aspen groves along the western shore turning gold against evergreen forests.
