The Salzach River cuts through the heart of Salzburg, carving a natural divide between the medieval Altstadt and the slopes of the Mönchsberg. This is a city built on salt and Mozart, its wealth from both etched into every Baroque façade and gilded church spire. The old town hums with a particular energy: cobblestone lanes too narrow for cars, the clatter of horse-drawn Fiakers on Residenzplatz, the scent of Sachertorte drifting from century-old Konditoreien. Above it all looms Hohensalzburg Fortress, an 11th-century stronghold that remains one of Europe's largest surviving medieval fortresses.

The Altstadt unfolds like a stage set, its UNESCO-listed centre a succession of archways, fountains, and pastel-hued townhouses. The Franziskanerkirche stands just beyond, its Gothic nave a counterpoint to the Counter-Reformation splendour of the Dom.

Salzburg Airport lies three kilometres west, a brief transfer that delivers you directly into this preserve of Baroque elegance.

The latter's Wiener schnitzel is prepared in full view through the street-facing kitchen, a golden constant in the heart of the Altstadt. For a more ambitious experience, ES:SENZ holds three Michelin stars in Das Achental hotel, 43 kilometres east, where Edip Sigl orchestrates a procession of creative dishes following an elaborate overture of aperitifs and amuse-bouches.

Salzburg's cultural landmarks crowd within minutes on foot. The Dom, rebuilt in the 17th century after fire destroyed its Romanesque predecessor, anchors Domplatz; the Residenz and its state rooms lie steps away. Book a table at the Schranne market, 700 metres north, where local producers still set up stalls as they have for centuries. The Gnigler Wasserfälle, a series of small cascades three and a half kilometres east, offers a woodland counterpoint to the Altstadt's density.

January through March brings biting Alpine cold, temperatures hovering just above freezing by day and dipping sharply after dark. Snow dusts the fortress and clings to the Untersberg massif beyond the city. The streets empty early, and cafés glow with yellow light behind frosted windows.

May and June usher in sudden warmth and unpredictable rain, the Alps drawing moisture from the north. The city blooms: chestnut trees shade the Mirabellgarten, and terraces fill along the Salzach. July and August remain mild rather than hot, ideal for walking the old town without the press of winter tour groups.

September through October balances crisp mornings with soft afternoon light that gilds the Baroque facades. By November the cold returns, and December transforms the Altstadt into a succession of Christmas markets scented with Glühwein and roasted almonds.
