San Sebastián sits where the Cantabrian Sea meets the verdant Basque hills, a city that has perfected the art of balancing old-world elegance with a radical culinary spirit. The Belle Époque architecture lining the Concha promenade tells part of the story: this was once the summer playground of Spanish royalty. San Sebastián Airport lies sixteen kilometres east; Biarritz across the French border offers another gateway forty kilometres north. Both connect easily by road to the city centre.

The city's Michelin density is almost absurd: three three-starred temples anchor a scene that includes twenty-one starred restaurants within cycling distance. Arzak, two and a half kilometres from the hotel, has held stars for half a century, while Pedro Subijana's Akelarre commands clifftop views five kilometres west, and Martín Berasategui's eponymous restaurant sits six kilometres out, a pilgrimage site for anyone serious about contemporary Basque cooking. Book months ahead for any of these. Closer to hand, the Parte Vieja's bar-lined streets offer a different kind of education: order txangurro (spider crab) at La Cuchara de San Telmo or anchovies so perfect they redefine the species.

Zurriola beach, six hundred metres northeast, draws surfers year-round; Pukas Surf Eskola rents boards and offers lessons. The Miramar Palace, an 1893 royal summer residence overlooking La Concha bay, now hosts cultural events and offers walking paths through its gardens. Eduardo Chillida's Peine del Viento XV, three massive iron sculptures clinging to rocks at the western end of Ondarreta beach, demonstrates how the Basque avant-garde claimed even the coastline. Start your mornings at Txapartegi market, six hundred metres away, where the cheese and charcuterie stalls open early.

Summer brings the warmest weather, with August days reaching twenty-two degrees and the sea finally warming enough for comfortable swimming. The beaches fill with Spanish families, and the city's pace slows to accommodate long lunches and evening paseos along the promenade. July and August see the least rain, though occasional Atlantic showers still blow through without warning.

Autumn and spring deliver the city's most dramatic light: sharp and changeable, with clouds racing in from the Bay of Biscay. September remains warm and brings the film festival crowds; May offers similar temperatures with fewer tourists. Both seasons see frequent rain, but the washed streets and wet cobblestones only amplify the old quarter's Belle Époque charm.

Winter is mild by northern European standards, with January highs around ten degrees, but the Atlantic wind cuts through even the warmest coat. This is peak pintxo season, when locals crowd into steamy bars and the Michelin restaurants offer their most ambitious tasting menus. The rain is relentless from November through March, but the culinary compensation more than balances the grey skies.
