Location
St. Moritz sits at 1,800 metres in the Upper Engadine, a glaciated valley where the light is famously crystalline and the air impossibly thin. The town clings to the southern slopes of the Albula Alps beneath Piz Nair, its grand hotels and chalets looking down over Lake St. Moritz and the Inn River valley. This is where Alpine resort culture was invented in the 19th century, and the legacy shows in the belle époque architecture, the groomed promenades, and the unshakeable confidence of a place that has hosted two Winter Olympics.
The property stands in St. Moritz Bad, the quieter thermal quarter where mineral springs bubble beneath the valley floor. From here, the Corviglia ski area is minutes away by funicular, and the lake shore is an easy walk. The Rhaetian Railway threads through the valley, its UNESCO-listed Albula line tracing improbable loops through the mountains toward Chur and beyond.
Lugano and Bergamo airports are roughly 90 kilometres south across the Maloja Pass, accessible by road or rail through some of Switzerland's most dramatic Alpine scenery. The journey itself is part of the arrival.
La Scarpetta brings rustic Italian warmth to the property with bare wooden tables, chandeliers, and a menu that leans contemporary. Amaru by Claudia Canessa occupies a handsome vaulted space on-site, delivering Peruvian flavours with a cheerful, attentive service style that matches the elegance of the room. For a true pilgrimage, make the 39-kilometre drive to Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, where Andreas Caminada's three-star kitchen delivers an exceptional experience from start to finish.
The Kulm Golf St. Moritz spreads across the valley floor less than a kilometre away, its fairways framed by larches and glacial peaks. In winter, the Corviglia ski area commands the slopes above town, while summer brings hiking trails that wind past waterfalls like the Cascada da Bernina, nine kilometres upvalley. Book a table at La Scarpetta for house-made pasta after a day on the mountain.
Winter transforms St. Moritz into a gleaming theatre of snow and sharp blue skies, with January temperatures dropping to minus twelve but daylight so bright it softens the cold. The famous "champagne climate" delivers over 300 days of sun annually, making even February's chill feel manageable on the slopes.
Spring arrives late and tentatively, with snow lingering into May and wildflowers finally pushing through in June. Summer is brief and luminous, July peaking around 18 degrees, the meadows alive with hikers and the lakes just warm enough for a bracing swim.
Autumn sharpens the air and gilds the larch forests in gold, September still mild before October ushers in the first serious frosts. The shoulder seasons between ski and summer reveal the valley at its most serene.
