The Ishim River carves through one of the world's youngest capital cities, a place where futuristic towers rise from the Kazakh steppe with audacious confidence. Astana, founded as a modest outpost in 1830, transformed after 1997 into a planned metropolis of bold ambition, its skyline shaped by architect Kisho Kurokawa's vision of a modern Central Asian hub. The Esil district hums with government buildings, museums, and wide boulevards that frame views of the river's slow bend through the city.

Within walking distance, the Palace of Independence anchors the new city's architectural identity, its contemporary lines a sharp contrast to the golden domes of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Cathedral, completed in 1995 as the city transitioned into its role as capital. The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, opened in 2014, holds collections that trace the country's nomadic heritage and Soviet past under a soaring white façade.

Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport sits 12 kilometres from the city centre, a short drive through flat grasslands that stretch toward every horizon. The steppe's immensity presses close to the capital's edges, a reminder of the vast geography that defines Kazakhstan.

The Museum of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan offers a concentrated look at the nation's post-independence story, its galleries chronicling the political and cultural shifts that accompanied Astana's rapid rise. The Beit Rachel Chabad Lubavitch Synagogue stands as a quiet testament to the city's religious diversity, a smaller counterpoint to the grander Orthodox and Islamic landmarks elsewhere in the capital. For a summer diversion, Sky Beach Club, just over a kilometre away, brings an artificial coastline to this landlocked city, complete with imported sand and poolside loungers.

Astana's dining scene tilts toward Kazakh and Russian staples: beshbarmak, the national dish of boiled meat over flat noodles, and plov loaded with lamb and caramelized carrots. Seek out restaurants serving kazy, a traditional horsemeat sausage, or samsa pastries filled with spiced meat. The city lacks Michelin recognition, but its table reflects the region's culinary roots, hearty and unapologetic. Book a table at a restaurant overlooking the Ishim for evening views as the steppe light fades to violet.

Winter grips Astana with Siberian ferocity. January and February see temperatures plunge well below freezing, the city wrapped in snow and sharp winds that sweep across the steppe. Spring arrives slowly, ice melting in March and April as the air begins to thaw.

Summer transforms the capital. July peaks near 28 degrees, the warmest stretch of the year when outdoor terraces fill and the river reflects long northern daylight. Occasional thunderstorms roll in from the plains, brief but dramatic. Autumn cools quickly, October already dipping toward freezing as the steppe turns amber.

The ideal window falls between late May and early September, when the city sheds its frost and the climate permits exploration without heavy layers. Summer offers the brightest skies and most comfortable temperatures, though even then, evenings can carry a crisp edge.
