Start at Imperfecto: The Chef's Table, just seven hundred metres away in a soaring glass-and-marble space where Chef Enrique Limardo orchestrates Latin American plates from his elevated perch. The cooking is bold, the counter intimate, the one Michelin star well earned. For a more ambitious evening, make the short trip to Jônt, Ryan Ratino's two-starred counter where the pace never falters and the technique borders on surgical, or to minibar by José Andrés, another two-starred experience that begins with cocktails in the lounge before settling into a curved counter for molecular gastronomy that justifies its cult following. Both sit roughly three kilometres northeast, an easy ride into the Penn Quarter dining corridor.

The Wednesday Farmer's Market sets up four hundred metres away, a compact affair but reliable for seasonal produce and prepared foods. Cultural grounding comes from the canal itself: walk the C&O towpath west into Georgetown, where the Old Stone House, built in 1765, is the district's oldest unchanged structure. Book a table at Imperfecto for the brass-accented drama and Limardo's confident hand with ceviche and grilled meats. The Dupont Circle Market, a kilometre and a half north, draws a livelier Sunday crowd if you're here on a weekend.

Winter arrives sharp and grey, with January and February hovering just above freezing during the day and dipping well below at night. Snow dusts the monuments intermittently, and the Mall empties of tourists. December through February sees the heaviest precipitation, though it's the cold that defines the season more than the snow itself.

Spring unfolds slowly from March into May, temperatures climbing from single digits into the high teens. Cherry blossoms erupt along the Tidal Basin in late March or early April, drawing enormous crowds. The city shakes off its winter torpor, café tables reappear, and the air softens into something almost tender.

Summer is muggy and relentless. July and August push past 25 degrees with thick humidity that clings to your shirt on the Metro platform. Afternoon thunderstorms crack the heat open but rarely clear it. Come for the Smithsonians' air conditioning, not the midday Mall strolls. Autumn, by contrast, is the capital's best season: September and October bring crisp mornings, golden light, and temperatures in the teens and twenties without the summer swelter.
