AlUla sits in northwestern Arabia's Hejaz, where rock-carved tombs and millennia-old trade routes pierce desert sands the colour of burnt sienna. This ancient oasis city, 350 kilometres northwest of Medina, once bridged India and the Levant along the incense trail, and today its valley holds one of the world's most arresting archaeological landscapes. Sandstone canyons rise from the valley floor in fantastical shapes, their surfaces scored with inscriptions that chart the evolution of written Arabic across Nabataean, Dedanite, and Lihyanite civilizations.

The old walled city of al-Dirah, a dense cluster of mudbrick homes sheltered by date palms, anchors the modern town. Overhead, the light shifts from honey gold at dawn to sharp white by midday, then mellows again as shadows lengthen across the rock faces. The air smells faintly of dust and wild thyme.

Nine kilometres north, the Hegra Archaeological Site (also known as al-Hijr or Madā'in Ṣāliḥ) unfolds across desert scrubland: Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage inscription. Built over 2,000 years ago by the Nabataeans, its monumental tombs rise from isolated sandstone outcrops, their facades carved with pediments and pilasters that echo Petra's grandeur but with far fewer visitors. AlUla International Airport lies 39 kilometres from town, with direct connections to Riyadh and seasonal international flights.

Hegra commands attention. Start with the royal tombs, where Nabataean stonemasons left behind nearly 100 monumental facades carved directly into the rock, some reaching four storeys high. The largest, Qasr al-Farid, stands alone on a sandstone massif, its unfinished state revealing the top-down carving technique. Inscriptions above doorways name the deceased and the year of construction, grounding the place in human ambition rather than abstraction. Book a guided sunrise visit to catch the facades at their most theatrical, when low light accentuates every chisel mark.

Beyond Hegra, the Sharaan Nature Reserve stretches 34 kilometres southeast, a protected expanse of desert valleys and rock formations where Arabian leopards and ibex once roamed and are now being reintroduced. Closer in, the old town of al-Dirah rewards an unhurried wander through its tight lanes and crumbling mudbrick architecture. The immediate surroundings hold rock art sites and viewpoints over the valley's date groves, best explored in the cooler months when the desert is walkable without punishing heat.

Winter, from November through February, brings crisp mornings that can dip below five degrees Celsius and afternoons hovering near twenty. The light is crystalline, the air dry and bracing, ideal for exploring sandstone canyons without oppressive heat. This is high season for a reason: the desert blooms briefly after winter rains, and the crowds, though present, remain manageable compared to Europe's peak summer.

Spring warms quickly. By April, daytime temperatures push past thirty degrees, though evenings stay pleasant enough for outdoor dining. The landscape takes on a bleached quality as the heat builds.

Summer is severe. June through September sees temperatures climb past forty degrees, the air shimmering with heat that makes midday exploration uncomfortable. Visit during these months only if you're prepared to shift plans to early morning and late evening, when the rocks glow amber and the temperature relents slightly.
