Al-Ula unfolds as an ancient crossroads reborn, where millennia of incense route history meets contemporary Saudi Arabia's cultural awakening. The air itself feels archaeological: dry desert wind carries scents of Tamarisk and distant sandstone, and the light strikes the rust-coloured canyon walls with theatrical intensity. This was once a market city linking the Persian Gulf to the Levant, and the layers of civilization, from Lihyanite to Nabataean to medieval Islamic, remain palpable in the mudbrick labyrinth of al-Dirah, the old walled quarter, and in the stone inscriptions documenting the evolution of written Arabic.

Ten kilometres north lies Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Nabataean necropolis of monumental tombs carved into rose-red cliffs more than two millennia ago. Often called Petra's sister city, Hegra reveals a quieter grandeur, its 111 decorated facades standing sentinel over empty desert rather than tourist-crowded siq. The surrounding Ashar Valley spreads in tones of ochre and amber, dramatic rock formations rising from sandy plains dotted with date palms.

This is the Hejaz, a region whose name appears in pre-Islamic poetry and Quranic text alike. Al-Ula International Airport lies 40 kilometres away, with direct connections making this remote northwestern corner of Medina Province increasingly accessible to travelers drawn by archaeology and desert silence.

On-property, Tama serves Middle Eastern and international cooking with views across the Ashar Valley, where the pool terrace becomes a vantage point for sunset over the canyon walls. The kitchen draws on regional traditions: expect dishes that reference Levantine and Arabian flavours, served against a landscape that seems to stretch to the horizon. Hegra demands a morning visit, when cooler air makes exploration of the carved tomb facades more comfortable. The site spreads across 52 hectares, each necropolis cluster revealing Nabataean engineering and artistry frozen in sandstone. Inscriptions name the dead and their builders, some still crisp after two thousand years. Sharaan Nature Reserve, 35 kilometres out, protects indigenous wildlife and dramatic rock formations, accessible through guided experiences that reveal the desert ecosystem beyond the obvious drama of stone and sand. The ancient walled quarter of al-Dirah, with its dense mudbrick alleyways and remnants of pilgrimage route commerce, offers a tactile encounter with centuries of oasis living.

Winter, from November through February, delivers the most forgiving conditions: daytime highs reach the low twenties Celsius, while nights cool sharply to single digits. This is when the desert feels most hospitable, the air crisp and the light crystalline, ideal for extended exploration of archaeological sites without the punishing heat.

Spring and autumn shoulder seasons bring warmer days, climbing into the high twenties and low thirties, with March and October still comfortable for outdoor activity. The temperature shift from dawn to midday can be dramatic, the sun gaining strength quickly once it clears the canyon walls.

Summer months, June through September, see temperatures soar past 38°C, the landscape shimmering under relentless sun. Rain is negligible year-round, with November the wettest month at a mere ten millimetres. Travel during cooler months to experience al-Ula's ancient wonders without the desert's full force.
