Location
Four Seasons brings its signature anticipatory service and 24-hour attentiveness to one of Southeast Asia's most remote corners, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos converge at the Ruak and Mekong rivers. This is the Golden Triangle, a region that once fuelled the opium trade and now sustains wild elephant herds in forested highlands. The property sits within the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation's grounds, a working conservation camp where rescue elephants roam freely.
Chiang Rai, Thailand's northernmost city and a UNESCO Design City founded by King Mangrai in 1262, lies 60 kilometres south. The immediate surroundings feel borderless: Bokeo International Airport in Laos is 11 kilometres away, while Myanmar's hills rise across the water. Ban Wang Lao, the nearest village, is a quiet farming settlement.
The landscape here is all teak canopy, mist-hung valleys, and the slow brown churn of the Mekong cutting between nations.
The mahouts rise before dawn, and you can join them, walking elephants to the river to bathe, feeding them bunches of sugarcane, watching calves stumble after their mothers through the tall grass. The foundation rescues elephants from logging and tourism industries; the animals live semi-wild, and encounters happen on their terms. Burma's golden stupas glint from across the river. You can paddle a traditional longtail boat to nearby villages, where Akha and Lahu hill tribes still wear handwoven indigo and silver.
Myanmar Market, four kilometres north, sprawls with chillies, fermented tea, and jade traders from across the border. Mae Sai, the northernmost point in Thailand, is a short drive. Book a mahout-led trek through the forest at sunrise. Starlight Night Market, an evening affair four and a half kilometres away, serves grilled river fish and sticky rice under strings of bulbs. There are no Michelin stars here; the draw is elephant conservation, not dining ambition.
November through February offers the clearest skies and coolest mornings, with temperatures sliding from the mid-twenties down to 15°C at night, ideal for walking elephants at dawn without the weight of humidity. March and April turn scorching, the mercury climbing past 34°C, though the forests hold some shade.
May ushers in the monsoon, which peaks in August with heavy afternoon downpours that turn the Mekong muddy and swell the jungle to an almost impenetrable green. September and October see the rains ease, leaving everything lush and washed clean.
The dry season, cool and golden-lit, is the time to come.
