Location
Kempinski has built a legacy on properties that honour their surroundings without fading into them, and this hotel on Gozo takes that philosophy seriously. The island itself, Malta's quieter, greener sibling, unfolds in terraced hillsides, honey-coloured limestone villages, and a pace that resists the Mediterranean tourist rush. This is not a place of nightclubs or sprawling resorts; it's a landscape of baroque churches, furrowed fields, and coastal cliffs where the only sound is the wind and the occasional bleat of a goat.
San Lawrenz sits inland, away from the handful of seaside towns, and the surrounding terrain shows off Gozo's rural character. The village is a five-minute drive from Dwejra, where the Inland Sea meets the Mediterranean through a natural tunnel in the rock. The Azure Window collapsed in 2017, but the coast here remains dramatic: arched cliffs, turquoise pools, and a geological restlessness that has made this stretch of shoreline legendary among divers. Xlendi, a small fishing village turned low-key resort, lies just under three kilometres away, its narrow inlet flanked by cliffs and a handful of waterfront restaurants.
Gozo's Ġgantija temples, some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world and part of a UNESCO-listed complex, sit roughly six kilometres north. Malta International Airport is thirty-four kilometres southeast, reachable by ferry from Mġarr Marina and then a short drive across Malta proper.
The island's dive sites are world-class, and the property sits close to some of the best: Il-Ħofra tal-Bidwin and Big Bear-Little Bear are less than two kilometres away, both offering caves, tunnels, and visibility that can stretch forty metres on a calm day. Cathedral Cave, a dramatic submerged chamber three and a half kilometres north, is a must for experienced divers. Book a table at De Mondion, twenty-six kilometres south in the fortified medieval city of Mdina. The one-Michelin-starred restaurant occupies the top floor of the Xara Palace, a sixteenth-century palazzo, and the food (modern Mediterranean with precise technique) matches the view over the old ramparts. Closer to the hotel, Xlendi offers a small beach and a strip of casual seafood spots where the catch is pulled from the boats each morning.
ION Harbour by Simon Rogan, a two-star restaurant in Sliema, is worth the thirty-three-kilometre journey for its meticulous contemporary cooking and fourth-floor views of the harbour. On Gozo itself, the pace is slower: morning markets in Victoria (the island's capital, seven kilometres east), walks along the Dwejra cliffs, and afternoons at Ir-Ramla l-Ħamra, a rare sandy beach with rust-red sand framed by low hills.
Summer is relentless and dry. July and August see temperatures climb past twenty-five degrees, and the landscape turns golden brown under cloudless skies. The sea warms to bathing temperature, and the island fills with beachgoers and divers. Evenings stay warm enough for open-air dining until well past sunset.
Autumn brings relief and occasional rain. September holds onto summer's warmth, but by October the island turns green again, wildflowers reappear, and the light softens to a honeyed glow. November can be wet, but the crowds thin out and the rural character of Gozo reasserts itself.
Winter is mild but changeable. Days hover around fourteen degrees, and storms blow in off the Mediterranean with little warning. Spring, especially April and May, is the best time to visit: temperatures rise without the summer intensity, the hillsides bloom with thyme and capers, and the island feels entirely yours.
