Location
Fairmont commands significant ground in many of the world's most storied cities, and while this property is a modern resort rather than a historic landmark, the brand's scale and reach are evident. Wailea stretches along Maui's southwestern shore, a purpose-built resort enclave developed in the early 1970s by Alexander & Baldwin and Northwestern Mutual. What was once arid lava fields is now a meticulously landscaped corridor of championship golf courses, white-sand beaches, and crescent bays separated by low volcanic headlands. The light here is fierce and clean, the air scented with plumeria and salt.
Polo Beach lies a few hundred metres south, a small cove favoured for snorkelling and seasonal turtle sightings. Wailea Beach curves gently to the north, backed by ironwood and kiawe trees, while Po'olenalena Beach stretches beyond it, quieter and wider, its sand warm beneath bare feet. The rhythm of the neighbourhood is dictated by golf (three courses radiate from the property within two kilometres), ocean access, and a loose string of dining and retail pavilions along Wailea Alanui Drive. There is no traditional town centre, only the careful spacing of resort architecture.
Kahului International Airport sits 25 kilometres to the north, reached via the Piilani Highway, which hugs the coast before arcing inland through scrubland and housing developments. The drive takes roughly 30 minutes in light traffic, longer during midday.
This is a base for water and fairway pursuits. Three golf courses, Wailea Emerald, Blue, and Gold, all lie within two kilometres, each designed to different philosophies of risk and reward. Polo Beach is two minutes' walk from the property; arrive early to claim shade beneath a kiawe and watch green sea turtles surface among the lava rocks. Palauea Beach, half a kilometre south, sees fewer crowds and better conditions for bodyboarding. For certified divers, the southern shore offers accessible sites: Shark Condos and Enenue, seven kilometres south, sit within the 'Āhihi-Kīna'u Natural Area Reserve, a protected bay where lava tubes harbour eels and reef fish.
Maui Wine operates a tasting room and vineyard five and a half kilometres upslope in Ulupalakua, where the elevation and volcanic soil produce drinkable pineapple wine and a few passable reds. Book ahead for the afternoon tastings. If your schedule allows, drive 25 kilometres north to Kula Marketplace for lilikoi butter and local honey, or continue to Keālia Pond, a wildlife refuge where winter brings migratory stilts and coots to the mudflats.
Summer, June through September, is Wailea's dry season. The air feels parched by afternoon, the sky unbroken blue, temperatures reaching 30 degrees. Trade winds blow steadily from the northeast, making the heat bearable on the coast but oppressive inland. This is peak season for calm ocean conditions and long beach days, though the landscape turns brown without rain.
Winter, December through February, brings the year's only substantial rainfall, though totals rarely exceed 90 millimetres in any month. The ocean swells, making snorkelling less reliable but surf more consistent. Mornings are cooler, the light softer, the air carrying a hint of moisture. Humpback whales pass offshore from December through April, their breaches visible from elevated vantage points.
Spring and autumn are brief transitions. March and April see the hillsides green slightly after winter rains, while October and November offer the warmest ocean temperatures of the year, the water still bathwarm from summer's heat.
