Cassis sits where Provence meets the Mediterranean, a working fishing port turned summer haven tucked between limestone cliffs and turquoise water. The calanques, those narrow fjord-like inlets carved into white rock, stretch east along the coast, and the town itself feels distinctly Provençal rather than Riviera glitzy: ochre-washed buildings, seafood restaurants lining the harbour, a morning market selling olive oil and lavender sachets. Cap Canaille looms above, the highest sea cliff in France, its rust-and-cream face catching light at every hour.

The commune earned brief cinematic fame as Alain Charnier's hideout in The French Connection, though today it draws visitors for its wines (crisp whites and rosés produced in the hills behind town, unrelated to the Burgundian liqueur) and for access to the calanques by boat or footpath. The streets narrow as you climb from the port, the air scented with wild thyme and salt.

Marseille Provence Airport lies 36 kilometres northwest, connected by shuttle or hire car. The drive from the autoroute descends through scrubland and vineyards before the sea opens up ahead, sudden and bright.

On-site, Les Belles Canailles serves Mediterranean cuisine on a terrace overlooking Cap Canaille, a setting that has drawn its share of well-known faces. The view alone justifies a table at sunset. Just over a kilometre away in Anse Corton, La Villa Madie (3 Michelin stars) offers creative cuisine in a contemporary dining room with a terrace that faces the same cape from a different angle, the blue water lapping below. Book well ahead. For a culinary detour, drive 13 kilometres west to AM par Alexandre Mazzia (3 stars) near Marseille's Stade Vélodrome, where the chef's Congolese upbringing informs his approach to spices, smoke, and small-plate virtuosity.

The calanques are Cassis's true draw. Dive sites cluster along the coast: Émergence du Bestouan lies just 300 metres from the port, while the Exsurgence de Port-Miou, 1.5 kilometres east, offers underwater springs and kelp forests. Provence Market, less than a kilometre inland, operates weekly with produce, cheese, and local handicrafts. The town itself invites slow mornings: espresso at a harbour café, a stroll to the Queyrons beach five kilometres east, or simply watching the morning fishing boats unload their catch.

July and August bring the kind of heat that empties the town by midday, temperatures pushing past 28°C, the streets white with sun and nearly silent until evening when the air cools and café tables fill. Rain is rare, the sky relentlessly clear.

Spring and early autumn offer gentler conditions. May through June and September see highs in the low twenties, warm enough for swimming but comfortable for hiking the calanques trails. The light softens, and the hillsides bloom with wildflowers in spring or turn golden in September.

Winter remains mild by northern European standards, though February and March bring the year's heaviest rain. Temperatures hover around 11°C, and the town quiets considerably. The calanques take on a stark beauty under grey skies, and the off-season pace reveals the working character of the port.
