InterContinental Hotels and Resorts has spent nearly eight decades connecting travelers to the soul of their destinations, and the Miraflores address delivers on that promise with a foothold in Lima's most polished coastal district. The property sits in the Armendáriz neighbourhood, a residential pocket of Miraflores where jacaranda-lined streets slope down toward the Pacific cliffs. This is the Lima that works: clean sidewalks, art galleries tucked into Belle Époque mansions, couples walking terriers past gelato shops that close for siesta.

Miraflores itself is a study in contrasts. The malecón (coastal promenade) draws joggers and paragliders at dawn, while the Larcomar shopping complex clings to the cliffside like a modernist barnacle. Playa La Estrella lies 200 metres from the hotel, a narrow strand where surfers paddle out between fishing boats. The Bioferia de Miraflores, a bustling organic market, sets up weekly a kilometre inland, and the district's pre-Columbian roots surface at Huaca Pucllana, a clay pyramid temple that predates the Inca by a millennium.

Ten kilometres northeast, the Historic Centre of Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1988, holds the colonial core: the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, the gilt-laden interiors of San Francisco monastery. Jorge Chávez International Airport lies 15 kilometres northwest, a straightforward taxi ride through the traffic-choked arteries of Callao and San Isidro.

The dining rhythm here tilts toward the cevicherías and pollerías that make Miraflores a culinary staging ground. While Lima has earned its reputation as South America's gastronomic capital, the immediate neighbourhood rewards walk-up curiosity: ask the concierge for the current standout for causa limeña (layered potato terrine with ají amarillo) or arroz con mariscos. Mercado San Martin, 800 metres away, is where housewives and chefs alike haggle over corvina and rocoto peppers. The Bioferia de Miraflores, a kilometre north, brings organic quinoa growers and pisco distillers to the Parque Reducto every Saturday. Book a tasting at Curador, a wine specialist 1.4 kilometres inland, to explore Peru's emerging viticulture from Ica and Arequipa.

The malecón offers paragliding launches with Pacific views that stretch to container ships on the horizon. Surf lessons are available 900 metres south, though the breaks here are forgiving, better suited to first-timers than the reef breaks of the northern coast. Lima Golf Club, four kilometres southeast, threads fairways through eucalyptus groves, a quiet counterpoint to the city's sprawl. For a deeper historical dive, the Historic Centre of Lima repays a half-day: the Convent of Santo Domingo's azulejo tilework, the bone-lined catacombs of San Francisco, the wrought-iron balconies that overhang Jirón de la Unión. Don't miss Huaca Pucllana at dusk, when the adobe bricks glow rust-red and the on-site restaurant serves alpaca anticuchos in the shadow of the ruins.

Lima sits under a coastal fog layer, the garúa, for much of the year, a grey mist that softens edges and flattens light. June through September brings the warmest days, with temperatures climbing into the high twenties and thin sunlight breaking through by midday. The ocean stays cool year-round, rarely topping 20°C, so even summer swimming demands resolve.

October through May is the grey season: overcast mornings, occasional drizzle, temperatures in the mid-teens. The city feels quieter, more introspective, the parks emptier save for dog walkers and street vendors selling picarones under awnings. January and February are the coolest months, dipping below six degrees at night, though indoor heating is rare and locals layer merino and alpaca.

The ideal window is July and August, when the fog lifts and the clifftop parks bloom with bougainvillea. Spring (September through November) offers a middle ground: warming days, fewer crowds, and the jacarandas beginning their purple bloom along Avenida Arequipa.

What Guests Say: Intercontinental Real Lima Miraflores by IHG

“The hotel sits right on the water and is what I would call a classic city hotel with beautiful flower arrangements in the lobby, where we were sat with welcome pisco sours for check in. Stayed in an Ocean View Junior Suite which was comfortable but nothing crazy memorable. Breakfast at the hotel rooftop restaurant had great views over the coast with a mix of a short a la carte menu and plenty of buffet options, and service was efficient and very friendly.”
