Mykonos earns its nickname, the Island of the Winds, honestly. The meltemi gusts that rake across this Cycladic outcrop in the Aegean Sea have shaped everything: the whitewashed cube architecture that hunkers low against the sky, the windmills that once ground grain for seafaring merchants, the rhythms of island life that shift between storm-lashed introspection and sun-soaked revelry. Chora, the port town on the western shore, draws most of the 10,000 year-round islanders and summer crowds chasing nightlife that rivals Ibiza. But step away from the waterfront and the island reveals quieter textures: fishing boats rocking in coves, chapels no bigger than a bedroom perched on hillsides, the kind of Greece that existed before the DJ sets.

The property sits above Agios Ioannis, a sandy crescent 300 metres down the slope, with Kapari beach just beyond. Ornos, a kilometre and a half south, fills with daybeds and tavernas in high season. To the east, five kilometres across the strait, the sacred island of Delos rises from the sea, its marble ruins visible on clear mornings.

Mykonos Island National Airport lies four kilometres from the property, a ten-minute drive. Ferries from Piraeus and neighbouring islands dock at the New Port, roughly five kilometres north.

The island's pull is as much sensory as historical. Start with a morning boat to Delos, where Apollo was born in myth and pilgrims once arrived from across the Greek world. The sanctuary attracted so many devotees that Delos became a thriving trading port, its wealth preserved in mosaic floors, marble lions, and temple columns that still catch the first light. Wander the residential quarter where merchants lived 2,000 years ago, then return to Mykonos by noon, sunburned and salt-crusted.

Closer to the property, Agios Ioannis offers calm water and a handful of tavernas where grilled octopodi and horiatiki arrive without ceremony. Ornos, busier but still manageable, has beach clubs if you want a lounger and cold wine within arm's reach. For those inclined toward viticulture, Vaptistis winery on Tinos, 20 kilometres north by ferry, produces crisp assyrtiko in volcanic soil. Book a table at one of Chora's waterfront psarotavernes for kakavia, the fisherman's stew that tastes of the Aegean itself.

July and August bring the full force of summer: temperatures hover in the mid-twenties Celsius, the sky burns white by midday, and the sea turns turquoise and still between wind gusts. Rain is almost unheard of, and the island thrums with energy until dawn. It's spectacular if you want heat and crowds, exhausting if you don't.

Spring and early autumn offer the best balance. May and June see temperatures in the low twenties, wildflowers on the hillsides, and beaches you might share with only a handful of others. September holds the warmth without the crush, the light softer and golden as the season turns.

Winter is for devotees. December through February can be blustery and wet, with temperatures in the low teens, but the island empties to a fraction of its summer population. Chora's marble lanes echo with footsteps, tavernas serve locals, and the wind carries the smell of woodsmoke and salt.
