Elia Beach, Mikonos 846 00, Greece

The property sits on the southeastern shore of Mykonos, far from the pulsing nightlife of Chora but close to the island's quieter rhythms. This is Ano Mera territory, where whitewashed chapels dot the hillsides and the Aegean stretches in unbroken blue. Mykonos earns its nickname, the Island of the Winds, through the meltemi that sweeps across the Cyclades in summer, turning windmills and shaping the island's character for millennia.

Elia Beach lies half a kilometre from the hotel, its golden sand and turquoise shallows drawing a more relaxed crowd than the party beaches farther west. Beyond the shoreline, the landscape opens into rocky headlands and scrub-dotted hills. Chora, the island's main town, sprawls along the western coast seven kilometres away, its labyrinthine alleys designed to confuse pirates now filled with boutiques and tavernas.

The island's true anchor lies 12 kilometres offshore. Delos, birthplace of Apollo in Greek mythology, was once the spiritual and commercial heart of the Cyclades, its marble sanctuaries drawing pilgrims from across the ancient world. Mykonos Island National Airport sits four kilometres from the property, connecting the island to Athens and seasonal European flights.

Elia Beach is the closest draw, a sweep of sand where the water stays shallow and warm through September. Agrari, just over a kilometre east, offers a quieter cove backed by tamarisk trees. Kalo Livadi, 1.6 kilometres farther, has a handful of beach tavernas serving grilled octopus and horiatiki under straw umbrellas. The rhythm here is unhurried: long lunches, afternoon swims, sunsets watched from a lounger with a glass of assyrtiko in hand.

Book a morning boat to Delos, 12 kilometres across the strait. The island is uninhabited now, its ruins protected as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a nature reserve. Walk among the marble lions of the Terrace, the mosaics of grand Hellenistic houses, the remnants of Apollo's sanctuary. Return by early afternoon; the last boats leave by three. For a taste of Cycladic winemaking, Moraitis Winery on Paros, 35 kilometres south, produces monemvasia and mandilaria from vines planted in volcanic soil. The tasting room overlooks terraced vineyards that fall toward the sea.

Summer on Mykonos is white light and relentless wind. July and August bring temperatures climbing past 26°C, the meltemi blowing steady and dry, flattening the sea into whitecaps. The island fills with visitors; beaches hum from dawn to midnight. Rain is nearly absent, the landscape burnished gold.

May, June, and September offer gentler warmth, the Aegean still swimmable but the crowds thinner. Light softens in late September, turning the Cycladic houses amber at dusk. Spring brings wildflowers to the hillsides; autumn restores a quieter rhythm to Chora's streets.

Winter is for locals. December through February sees temperatures drop to 13°C, rain sweeping in from the west. Most hotels close, ferries reduce schedules. The winds never stop, but the island regains a solitude lost to summer's crush.
