Map of Agios Ioannis 846 00, Greece
Agios Ioannis 846 00, Greece

The property overlooks Agios Ioannis, a sheltered cove three kilometres south of Mykonos town, where whitewashed cube houses cascade toward the Aegean and the island's famous winds sweep across sun-bleached headlands. Apollo's mythic birthplace, Delos, floats on the horizon just five kilometres offshore, its marble ruins visible on clear mornings. This is the Cyclades stripped to essentials: stone, light, sea.

Mykonos earns its nickname, "The Island of the Winds," through the meltemi gusts that shape everything here, from the geometry of its architecture to the rhythm of daily life. The main town, Chora, sprawls along the western coast, a labyrinth of narrow lanes designed to confound both wind and pirates. Bougainvillea spills over garden walls. Fishing boats bob in the old harbour. By night, the waterfront bars and clubs that made Mykonos synonymous with hedonism come alive.

Mykonos Island National Airport sits three kilometres away, with direct summer flights from across Europe and year-round connections through Athens.

Agios Ioannis beach stretches just 300 metres from the property, its golden sand lapped by turquoise shallows. Ornos, a broader crescent of sand favoured by families, lies less than a kilometre south. For a quieter cove, follow the coastal path to Kapari. The real pilgrimage, though, is to Delos. Book a morning boat from the New Port marina, five kilometres north, and spend three hours among the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Terrace of the Lions, and the mosaics of aristocratic villas where merchants once ruled Mediterranean trade. UNESCO recognition came in 1990, but the island's sacred status dates to the 8th century BC.

Back on Mykonos, the windmills above Chora mark the edge of Little Venice, where balconies hang over the water and sunset crowds gather with Aperol spritzes. Don't miss the Archaeological Museum's collection of Delian pottery, or the narrow streets of Matogianni for linen tunics and handwoven sandals. For wine, drive north to Vaptistis, twenty kilometres distant, where assyrtiko vines cling to terraced slopes.

July and August bring searing heat, temperatures climbing past 26°C, the sea warm as bathwater, the meltemi winds a saving grace against the glare. The island thrums at full capacity: every lounger claimed, every taverna table booked. September offers the same warmth with half the crowds, the light turning golden as the season winds down.

Spring arrives gently. May sees the hills flush green after winter rains, wildflowers dotting the trails, daytime temperatures reaching a comfortable 20°C. The winds still gust, but without summer's relentless force.

Winter is quiet, almost monastic. December and January bring brief showers and temperatures that dip to 10°C at night. Most hotels close, the town contracts inward, and the island returns to its fishermen and shepherds. It's Mykonos stripped of its party mask, stark and beautiful.
