Soprarno Suites occupies the Oltrarno, Florence's left-bank quarter where artisan workshops still line narrow streets and palazzo façades glow ochre in the late afternoon sun. This is the city south of the Arno, less trafficked than the tourist crush around the Duomo, where goldsmiths and picture framers keep centuries-old trades alive behind heavy wooden doors. Cross the Ponte Vecchio and you're in the thick of it: the Uffizi, the Bargello, the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore rising above the rooftops. The Historic Centre of Florence, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, unfolds in all directions.

Florence Airport, Peretola, sits six kilometres northwest; taxis make the journey in twenty minutes outside rush hours. Pisa's airport, sixty-nine kilometres west, serves a wider network of international routes.

The Oltrarno rewards slow wandering. Start at the morning market in Piazza Santo Spirito, where vendors sell pecorino and wild boar salami alongside secondhand books and vintage linens. Climb to Piazzale Michelangelo for the postcard view, or walk the ramparts at Forte di Belvedere when they open for exhibitions. Serious eating demands advance planning: Enoteca Pinchiorri, 1.2 kilometres away, holds three Michelin stars for Italian contemporary cuisine served in a 17th-century palazzo. Santa Elisabetta, less than a kilometre distant in the Byzantine Torre della Pagliazza, Florence's oldest circular tower, offers creative Mediterranean cuisine under two-star direction. Book a table at either weeks ahead.

Closer to hand, the Mercato del Porcellino (six hundred metres) has operated since the 16th century; its leather goods stalls surround the bronze boar whose snout visitors rub for luck. Day trips into Chianti country reach wineries like Fattoria di Bagnolo (8.2 kilometres) and Mangiacane (9.7 kilometres), where sangiovese vines climb hillsides terraced by generations of the same families. The Medici Villas, scattered across the Tuscan countryside and collectively protected as a UNESCO site since 2013, lie within an hour's drive.

July and August bring heat that settles over the Arno valley like a weight, thirty-degree afternoons that empty the streets and drive locals to hilltop retreats. The city slows, shutters close for August ferragosto, and only the determination of tourists keeps the museums open. Come instead in May or September, when temperatures hover in the low twenties and the light turns golden over terracotta rooftops.

October and November see steady rain washing the cobblestones, but the crowds thin and galleries grow quieter. You'll have space to stand before Botticelli without elbows in your ribs. Winter mornings (December through February) can be sharp, temperatures dipping near freezing, but the city takes on a different character: wood smoke curling from chimneys, empty piazzas, the pleasure of a warm café after hours in the Uffizi.

Spring arrives early, March already climbing into the mid-teens. Wisteria drapes the garden walls, markets overflow with artichokes and asparagus, and the whole city seems to exhale. This is Florence at its most generous, before summer's heat descends.
