The capital itself, reachable by short speedboat, sprawles across reclaimed land with the chaos of motorbikes threading narrow streets, the gold dome of the Grand Friday Mosque catching the afternoon sun. Raalhugandu Beach, eight kilometres north, offers a rare stretch of public shoreline where locals gather at dusk, the sea breeze carrying the scent of grilled reef fish from nearby stalls.

The northeast monsoon, running December through March, delivers the driest, sunniest weather. Skies are high and cloudless, humidity drops, and the sea lies glassy most mornings. February and March see the least rainfall, ideal for extended reef dives and uninterrupted sun.

The southwest monsoon, May through October, brings heavier rains and choppier seas, though showers tend to be brief and intense rather than day-long affairs. The air grows thicker, the lagoon occasionally roiled by wind, but the diving remains excellent as nutrients stir the water column and big pelagics move closer to shore.

April and November straddle the monsoon shifts, offering a middle ground: warm, occasionally breezy, with afternoon squalls that clear as quickly as they arrive. The light in November has a particular softness, the sun lower on the horizon, gilding the water at dawn and dusk.
