The property stands in San Felipe, the colonial heart of Panama City where narrow cobbled streets carry five centuries of Pacific trade history. Founded in 1673 after Henry Morgan's privateers burned the original settlement to ash, this peninsula became the fortified nerve centre of Spanish commerce between continents. The Palacio de las Garzas, seat of presidential power since the same year, anchors the neighbourhood's baroque streetscape. Balconies overhang stone façades. Church bells mark the hours. The air smells of salt wind off the Pacific and fried empanadas from corner fondas.

Walk three blocks in any direction and you'll trace the perimeter of this compact quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage district where restoration work hums quietly behind wrought-iron gates. Plazas open suddenly between buildings, offering shade and glimpses of container ships queuing at the canal's Pacific entrance. The Panama Museum of Contemporary Art occupies a former customs house seven blocks north.

Marcos A. Gelabert International Airport sits three kilometres northeast for domestic connections. Tocumen International Airport, the country's main hub, lies twenty-one kilometres east with highway access through the modern city's glass tower corridor.

Mercado Publico San Felipe Neri, seven hundred metres inland, operates morning to evening with vendor stalls selling corvina ceviche, patacones, and ripe plantains still warm from the fryer. The market's second floor holds comedores where sancocho simmers in wide pots. Book a table at one of the corner establishments and ask for the day's catch. Playa El Tuco, three hundred metres along the seawall, draws families at weekends; the sand is coarse volcanic grey, the water calm.

The Colonial Transisthmian Route, inscribed as a UNESCO site in 2025, traces the sixteenth-century path that carried Peruvian silver and Oriental silks across the isthmus. Segments of the original stone camino real remain visible sixty-six kilometres north. Balboa Yacht Club, two and a half kilometres south along the causeway, serves grilled whole snapper on an open terrace facing the Bridge of the Americas. Reserva Forestal Universitaria, three kilometres out, offers walking trails through secondary rainforest where howler monkeys call at dawn and dusk.

January through March brings the driest months, when humidity drops and skies hold clear blue from morning until the brief equatorial twilight. Temperatures hover near thirty degrees. The city feels lighter, more walkable. Café tables fill the plazas.

May inaugurates the wet season. Afternoon downpours arrive with theatrical punctuality, sheeting off terracotta roofs and flooding gutters within minutes before clearing by evening. The forest on the city's edges turns a saturated green. July and August see the heaviest rainfall, though mornings often start bright.

December marks the transition back to drier weather. Temperatures cool slightly, trade winds pick up from the north, and the light takes on the crystalline quality that made this coast a navigator's landmark for centuries.

What Guests Say: Hotel La Compañía Casco Antiguo

“The location is solid: right in Casco Viejo. The design is breathtaking. The hotel is built around a big central courtyard and has three different wings (which I think were original and restored): the Spanish wing from the late 1600s, the French wing from the late 1700s and the American wing from the early 1900s. We loved wandering through each to look at the architecture and design choices.”

“We stayed there last month (on points) and loved it. Great renovation and tons of interesting period photos. Breakfast is very good, and we also ate a lunch and dinner at the main restaurant, which was very good. There are a few restaurant options. Location in Casco Viejo is good.”
