Panama City unfolds where the Pacific meets the spine of the Americas, a metropolis of sharpened glass towers and Spanish colonial stone that straddles five centuries of global commerce. Founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias Dávila as the launching point for expeditions into Peru, the original settlement fell to privateer Henry Morgan's flames in 1671. Two years later it rose again on a peninsula eight kilometres west, and the ruins of that first city, now a World Heritage Site, still draw visitors to their crumbling walls and silent plazas.

The modern capital hums with the energy of international banking and the constant passage of container ships through the canal at its doorstep. The historic Casco Viejo quarter, with its baroque churches and wrought-iron balconies, presses against the waterfront while the financial district's skyline climbs skyward behind it. Palacio de las Garzas, the presidential palace dating to 1673, anchors the old city's administrative heart.

Marcos A. Gelabert International Airport sits one kilometre away for regional flights, while Tocumen International Airport, the main gateway, lies 22 kilometres east with straightforward highway access into the city.

Within two kilometres, the Mercado de Artesanías de Balboa and Mercado Publico San Felipe Neri offer handwoven molas, tagua nut carvings, and the pulse of daily commerce in a city that has always traded goods from two oceans. The Panama Museum of Contemporary Art, established in 1962, presents rotating exhibitions of Latin American work in a compact, well-curated space. Head 2.5 kilometres to Reserva Forestal Universitaria for shaded walking trails through tropical dry forest, or three kilometres southwest to Playa El Tuco, a quiet strip of sand where the city's edge meets the Pacific.

The Amador Causeway, built with rock excavated from the canal, stretches seven kilometres into the bay, connecting three small islands and lined with walking paths, marinas, and seafood restaurants where corvina and ceviche come straight from the morning's catch. Book a morning at Flamenco Marina to arrange sportfishing charters or island-hopping day trips through the Pearl Archipelago, where the water runs impossibly clear and the traffic noise fades to nothing but wind and gulls.

January through April bring the dry season, when the sky stays cloudless for weeks and the city bakes under consistent heat, temperatures hovering near 30°C. The streets empty at midday; mornings and late afternoons are best for walking the seawall or the old quarter's cobbled lanes.

May ushers in the rains, and they build through the wettest months of June, July, and August, when afternoon downpours arrive with sudden force, drumming on awnings and flooding low corners before draining as quickly as they came. The air stays warm and thick, but the rain cools the evenings and greens the hillsides.

By December the precipitation tapers, and the city eases back into its drier rhythm. The clearest skies and lowest humidity fall between January and March, making this the prime window for canal transits and coastal exploration, though the wet season's dramatic cloudscapes have their own theatre.
