Location
W Hotels speaks to a crowd drawn to bold aesthetics and music-driven energy, a brand identity that plays well against Doha's gleaming skyline. The property sits in West Bay, the capital's financial and diplomatic heart, where glass towers rise along the Persian Gulf corniche and the city's contemporary ambitions are written in steel and light. This is not the souq-lined old quarter, it's the new Qatar, where international business hums behind mirrored facades and rooftop bars glow after dark.
Within walking distance, the waterfront promenade curves north and south, lined with palms and dotted with outdoor cafés. The West Bay skyline, particularly striking at dusk, has become the postcard silhouette of modern Doha. Doha was founded in the 1820s as an offshoot of the older settlement of Al Bidda, but it was declared the nation's capital only in 1971, when Qatar gained independence. Since then, the city has grown at a remarkable pace, with over 80% of the country's population now living in the Doha Metropolitan Area, a sprawl that includes Education City and the sports complexes of Aspire Zone.
Hamad International Airport lies ten kilometres southeast, connected by a swift highway drive. The city's positioning on the Persian Gulf gives it a coastal openness, the sea breeze tempering the desert heat that presses in from the west.
On-site, Coya brings Peruvian energy to the property, its split-level dining room humming with Aztec-inspired colour and live-fire cooking visible from the moody interior. The menu leans toward sharing plates, ceviche and anticuchos best ordered in multiples. Beyond the hotel, Jamavar, 1.3 kilometres away, holds a Michelin star for its Kashmir-inspired Indian cuisine, served in a dining room that blends traditional elements with modern polish inside the Sheraton Grand. For a more dramatic setting, make the short journey to IDAM by Alain Ducasse, perched on the top floor of the Museum of Islamic Art, where the views across the bay compete with the French contemporary menu, the whole experience framed by the museum's extraordinary architecture.
Four and a half kilometres south, Souq Waqif sprawls through narrow alleys thick with incense smoke and the chatter of stallholders. This is Doha's most atmospheric market, where spice vendors, falcon traders, and textile merchants share space under traditional wooden beams. Book a table at one of the souq's rooftop restaurants for grilled kebabs and tea after dark. The Falcon Souq and Animal Souq sit nearby, offering glimpses into Qatari sporting traditions. Katara Beach, three kilometres north, provides a stretch of sand backed by the Katara Cultural Village, a hub for galleries and open-air amphitheatres.
Winter, from November through March, is the only season that makes sense for extended outdoor exploration. Temperatures range from the low twenties by day to the mid-teens at night, the air dry and the Gulf breeze steady. The souqs feel less punishing, the corniche promenade actually walkable. Rain is rare, a brief shower in March at most.
Summer, June through September, is brutal. Temperatures climb above 40°C and the humidity off the Gulf makes the heat feel heavier, the kind that pins you to air-conditioned interiors. The streets empty by midday, the city rhythm shifting entirely to evening hours.
Spring and autumn offer brief transitions, April and May warming rapidly toward summer, October and November cooling just enough to revive the outdoor terraces and beachfront activity. Plan for November to March if you intend to see Doha on foot.
