Therasia Resort occupies a volcanic headland on Vulcano, the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands, where the island's restless geology gave the modern world its word for fire mountains. Porto di Levante, the main harbour less than two kilometres south, is where hydrofoils arrive from Sicily and Calabria, delivering day-trippers who vanish by evening, leaving the island to its quieter rhythms.

This is Sicily at its most elemental: no baroque churches or Norman fortresses, just stone, sea, and thermal energy rising from the earth. The nearest mainland airports are Reggio Calabria (73 kilometres) and Catania (108 kilometres); from either, a ferry or hydrofoil completes the journey to an island that feels both ancient and alive.

On-site dining reaches rare heights at I Tenerumi, where Chef Davide Guidara's two-Michelin-starred "plant-based" cuisine moves beyond any vegetarian or vegan category into something entirely its own. Book a table before sunset to watch the light change over the Aeolian archipelago while a tasting menu unfolds that treats vegetables, grains, and volcanic soil with the reverence usually reserved for premium seafood. The property's second restaurant, Il Cappero, holds one Michelin star for contemporary Mediterranean cooking that draws from the island's volcanic terroir. Beyond the table, Vulcano rewards the geologically curious and the beach-devoted in equal measure. Hike to the Gran Cratere della Fossa, still steaming and sulphurous, for panoramic views across all seven islands. The black sand at Spiaggia delle Sabbie nere absorbs afternoon heat, while thermal springs at Spiaggia delle Acque Calde create natural hot pools where seawater meets volcanic warmth. Take a boat to Lipari's Marina Corta, four kilometres across the water, where whitewashed houses climb steep hillsides and the obsidian trade that enriched these islands millennia ago is remembered in a small archaeological museum.

Summer on Vulcano is pure Mediterranean intensity: July and August bring temperatures near 30°C, with almost no rain and relentless sun that turns the volcanic landscape ochre and gold. The sea warms to bath temperature, evenings stretch long, and the island fills with Italian holidaymakers through mid-September.

Spring and autumn offer gentler conditions. May sees temperatures around 21°C with wildflowers softening the volcanic rock, while September retains summer warmth but thins the crowds considerably. October can be lovely, still mild enough for swimming, though rain begins to return.

Winter is mild but wet, with frequent showers from November through February and daytime highs around 13°C. The island quiets dramatically; some businesses close, ferries run less frequently, but the volcanic landscape takes on a stark, moody beauty that appeals to those seeking solitude over sunshine.
