Parque Nacional Diriá, twenty-five kilometres inland, preserves old-growth tropical dry forest with trails that reveal coatis, white-faced capuchins, and the occasional puma track in the dust. Start early to beat the midday heat and carry water; the humidity climbs fast once the sun clears the canopy.

The dry season, December through April, delivers unbroken sun and offshore winds that groom the morning surf. Temperatures push into the low thirties by midday, the landscape turning golden-brown as the forest sheds leaves to conserve moisture. Dust rises from the roads, and the light takes on a hard, crystalline edge.

May marks the shift. Afternoon storms roll in from the Pacific, drenching the forest in minutes before clearing to steamy evenings. The wet season, lasting through November, brings the heaviest rains in September and October when rivers swell and the jungle erupts in vivid green. Mornings often stay clear, the best surf conditions arriving with the consistency of the southern hemisphere swells.

The shoulder months of November and early December offer a sweet spot: the landscape still lush from the rains, crowds thinned out, and the dry season's reliable sunshine beginning to settle in.
