Alfama is Lisbon's soul made visible: narrow cobbled lanes that twist upward from the Tagus, tile-fronted houses in faded ochre and blue, washing strung between wrought-iron balconies. The neighbourhood survived the 1755 earthquake that levelled most of the city, leaving behind a medieval tangle of streets where fado drifts from tascas after dark and trams clatter past at arm's length. The air carries salt from the river and the scent of grilled sardines.

The Sé Cathedral, a Romanesque fortress-church built after Afonso Henriques wrested the city from Moorish rule in 1147, anchors the district. Downhill, the Praça do Comércio opens onto the water with its triumphal arch and arcaded perimeter, the grand gesture of post-earthquake reconstruction. Uphill, viewpoints like Miradouro das Portas do Sol frame terracotta rooftops cascading toward the harbour. The streets here feel like a living archive: Phoenician foundations underfoot, Visigothic remnants in old stonework, Moorish geometry in the layout itself.

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport lies eight kilometres northeast, a quick metro or taxi ride into the historic centre.

On-site, SÁLA de João Sá brings modern Portuguese cooking to Baixa, the chef's deft hand evident in seasonal menus that rework tradition without losing its thread. Within walking distance, Belcanto (two Michelin stars, 700 metres west in Chiado) occupies a corner near the ruins of a convent toppled in 1755, while Henrique Sá Pessoa (two stars, two and a half kilometres northwest) now holds court in the bucolic Páteo Bagatela between Jardim das Amoreiras and Parque Eduardo VII. Book a table at either well ahead.

The Tuesday and Saturday market at Mercado de Santa Clara, one kilometre north, spreads azulejos, vintage linens, and bric-a-brac across Campo de Santa Clara. Mercado da Ribeira, just over a kilometre west, anchors the TimeOut food hall but retains its morning produce stalls. Seven kilometres west, the Jerónimos Monastery and Torre de Belém, both UNESCO-listed, exemplify Manueline architecture at its most ornate, the monastery begun in 1502 to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage. Don't miss the custard tarts at Pastéis de Belém, still made to a 19th-century recipe.

Winter drapes Lisbon in soft Atlantic light. Temperatures hover between nine and fifteen degrees, rain arrives in fitful bursts, and the cafés fill with locals nursing bica and reading newspapers. The city feels introspective, unhurried.

Spring sharpens the colours: jacaranda blooms purple against whitewashed walls, the Tagus gleams silver-blue, and daytime warmth climbs into the high teens. By May, outdoor tables reappear and the light stretches late into evening.

Summer is unambiguous. July and August bring near-zero rainfall, temperatures in the mid-twenties, and a bone-dry heat that makes the tiled interiors of churches a relief. The river breeze tempers the warmth, and the city empties slightly as locals decamp to the coast. September holds the summer's glow without the August crowds, ideal for walking the hills without breaking a sweat.
